Shhhhh….. NOT!

I got this tip from my mom when Ashton was a newborn. He was sound asleep taking a nap and Mom said, “Get the vacuum and vacuum his room.”

?!

“Really, I did it for all my kids and it works.”

“Works?”

“They’ll sleep through anything.”

And the fact is, I slept through a fire alarm in the college dorms and the alarm was right outside my door. I often sleep through my alarm or work the sound of it into my dream and keep on sleeping. Even motion doesn’t faze me. If I’m in a car for awhile, I’m sound asleep.

So, I tried it. I’m not one to clean unless I really MUST. But the whole idea of being quiet and tiptoeing around a sleeping baby never existed in our house. You know the loud ‘eeeeerrrrk’ sound that packing tape makes? That was Brice’s lullaby tunes. We were moving when he was about three months old. Packing boxes in his room as he dreamed away.

All three of my kids are really good sleepers. Yeah, often they don’t want to sleep at night (topic for another post, this one is about babies) but once asleep noise won’t wake them!

Thanks, Mom!

  2. I didn't tiptoe around my kids either, one slept well one didn't. Always worth a try

  3. I can sleep through anything....I'll have to ask my mom if vacuumed while I was napping. I can't sleep in moving vehicles though. And I find it hard to fall asleep unless it's really dark and quiet. But, once I'm out, I'm out!

  4. It's whatever the sleeping person is used to, I played the piano in the same room that my mother napped in.

  5. That's the one thing I tell all my new-mom friends/family. It's so true! My little one could sleep through a train wreck. The biggest mistake is being quiet for baby. My BIL and SIL were quiet for their baby. When they came home to visit they stayed at my inlaws' and it was a joke. While their baby was napping they insisted everyone whisper... even in the other end of the house! We decided to just leave after being shushed more than once.

  6. Makes sense. I like some noise when I sleep. I hate dead silence.

  7. I concur with this advice. I heard about this before my first boy was born and tried it out, although I would also alternate with loud music or doing dishes. Worked like a charm. All 3 boys can sleep even if a rock band played underneath their window =)

  8. I used to set our son's bassinet by the clothes dryer when it was on and I put music on for the kids to sleep to when they were in a swing.
If I tried to keep the house quiet for a sleeping baby, the baby would always wake up at the first sound we made.
    Noise works.

    Hugs!!

  9. My kids sleep through thunder storms, the washing machine, vaccum cleaner & two dogs barking wildly - no quiet in this house! Even grotbag sleeps through bugalugs screaming while he has been teething!!

  10. Agreed. Only I suspect their may be a genetic component to "being a good sleeper", as well. Crossing fingers and hoping this particular bad gene has not been passed on to my boys. So far, so good.

  11. Kids be weird.

One of my professors said he came home once to find the babysitter holding his son in front of a running faucet because that's the only way he would stop crying.

Kids make me sleepy and I don't even have any.

  12. My daughter always fell asleep to the sound of the hairdryer. So much so that it became her ONLY lullaby. I'm 100% serious. :) And I didn't have to clean a lick! [? what does that even mean?]

  13. I'm with ya, I never tip toed while my son was napping. However, that doesn't mean I wish him to sleep through a fire alarm. That's just a tad dangerous :)

You visited so long ago and I apologize for not reciprocating sooner!

  14. No babies anymore. Just a pre-teen and a 9 YO. However, there will be pantry moments where you'll appreciate the fact that your kids are good sleepers.

  15. No kids yet so I guess no need for the vaccum but I'll be sure to by one before then. :-)Stop by for a giveaway when you have a chance.

  16. Hmm, I wonder if my parents did this one to me. I slept through the burglar alarm going off...

  17. This is 100% true. I never kept a quiet house so Lorelli could sleep. No way was I going to have to halt my life for an infant to nap. She can sleep through just about everything. I always tell friends this.
